Guitar Music Theory

TheCipher.com_Home — Blumberg’s Music Theory Cipher for Guitar and Mandolin

TheCipher.com is probably the most interesting site I have come across for music theory. Developed by Roger Blumberg, TheCipher.com is the predecessor to Blumberg’s in-progress book currently titled “Blumberg’s Music Theory Cipher for Guitar and Other Stringed Instruments”.

TheCipher.com offers unique tools to help one better understand the fretboard. Blumberg breaks “the cipher” down to four main topics:

  • A chromatic number line
  • Translation tables
  • Fretboard navigation using th Five Degree Calcualtion Line
  • Built-in Pattern of Unisons and Octaves

TheCipher.com also has printouts/tables covering scales, chords, inversions, triads, etc.

Satch moving to Marshall?

from Marshall via GuitarNoize

According to a news release posted on the Marshall website, Joe Satriani is moving back to Marshall amps. Ouch – that’s gotta hurt Peavey.

Here’s the article : http://www.marshallamps.com/resources/news/resources_news.asp

Return of the Champ!

.:: Fender®.com ::.

Fender has announced they are reintroducing the ‘57 Champ. The acclaimed “practice amp” used by Eric Clapton, Joe Walsh and others on some very famous tunes has returned. Hooray Fender!. According to Fender:

Today’s ’57 Champ is a faithful recreation of its popular ancestor, hand-wired and with touch-sensitive response for rich tone.

What is it they say…”What goes around comes around” or something like that.  All I have to say is – when? and how much?

Nice background article on Chickenfoot.

And of course Joe is using his Peavey JSX to slay the masses.

According to the video at MusicRadar some of the details of Joe’s setup…

Joe has gone from .09 to .10 strings and dropped a half-step for his #1 and #2 guitars. His pedal setup is Vox Wah Wah, POG, Micro-POG, two Saturators, Voodo Vibe, and a Ibanez FL9 Flanger and two Vox Joe Satriani Time Machine. Two routes, one to a wet amp and one to a dry amp.
